The Atlanta Falcons are expected to release quarterback Kirk Cousins in March 2025. This move was expected after Cousins was benched.

Head coach Raheem Morris decided to bench Cousins following their woeful win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was given the reins of the offense.

Penix Jr. will lead the offense for the first time on Sunday against the New York Giants.

The Falcons were criticized for drafting Penix Jr. this past April. But maybe they knew something that no one else did.

One month before drafting Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million that was fully guaranteed in March. It shocked many in the sports world.

The Falcons were in such a hurry to sign Cousins that they actually got hit with a tampering violation and lost a future draft pick.

ESPN is reporting that Cousins has a $10 million roster bonus due on March 17th. According to Spotrac, by releasing him before June 1st, 2025, the Falcons will get hit with a $65 million dead cap hit.

However, the team would save $25 million with the move. Thus, it would mean a $40 million dead cap hit once the savings are added.

There are also other scenarios that may play out next March with Cousins contract. But we’ll examine them later.
