Olympic athlete Imane Khelif finished third, with four votes.
Before being drafted by the Fever, Clark was a star during her final season of college basketball. She helped guide the Iowa Hawkeyes to the Women’s Basketball Tournament National Championship game.
Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, Clark and her teammates lost the title game for the second straight year.
Clark is just the fourth women’s basketball player to be named the AP Female Athlete of the Year, dating back to 1931. She is the first since Candace Parker in 2021.
Parker also received the honor in 2008. Rebecca Lobo received the honor in 1995. Sheryl Swoopes was the first to receive the honor in 1993.
“I grew up a fan of Candace Parker and the people who came before me and to be honored in this way, is super special and I’m thankful,” Clark said in a phone interview. “It was a great year for women’s basketball and women’s sports.”
Clark started 40 regular season games for the Fever. She helped turn around the franchise that went 13-27 in 2023.
