Former NFL player Bill Bergey has passed away

Former NFL player Bill Bergey has passed away. He was 79.

An official cause of death has not been announced yet. Yet, his son, Jake Bergey, who played 10 seasons for the Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League and has his jersey retired by the team, said his father died of cancer.

“After a long hard 3-year battle, Dad lost his fight with Cancer,” Bergey said in a post on X. “The best father, friend, grandfather, football player, and outright great person in this world. I will truly miss him. Love you, Dad.”

Bergey played 12 seasons in the NFL. The linebacker was drafted in the second round of the 1969 NFL/AFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

He was the AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 1970, the AFL merged with the NFL.

Bergey played with the Bengals from 1969 through 1973. He was also named the Bengals 50th Anniversary team.

The five-time Pro Bowler then spent the rest of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played for the Eagles from 1974 through 1980.

He is part of the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame. He is also part of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

In the 12 seasons in the NFL — five seasons with the Bengals and seven seasons with the Eagles — he appeared in 159 games. This included 157 starts. 

According to Pro Football Reference, he had 18.5 sacks in his career. He had a career-high 4.0 sacks during the 1978 season. 

He also had 27 interceptions and 21 fumble recoveries.
