The No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns defeated the No. 4 seed Arizona State Sun Devils in the second round College Football Playoff matchup. The Longhorns won 39-31 in double overtime in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Longhorns improved to 13-2 on the season. They will play the winner of the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential that features the No. 8 seed Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 1 overall seed Oregon Ducks.
Texas and the Rose Bowl Game winner will play on Friday, January 10th, in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The game will be played in Dallas, Texas with a 7:30 pm EST kickoff.
The Longhorns are 2-0 against the Sun Devils. They also won 52-34 over the Sun Devils on the Holiday Bowl on December 27th, 2007, in San Diego, California.
Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers went 20 of 30 for 322 yards. He had three touchdown passes and one interception.
Quintrevion Wisner had 18 carries for 45 yards. Matthew Golden had seven receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown.
Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt went 24 of 46 for 222 yards. He also had one interception.
Cam Skattebo had 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Skattebo also had eight receptions for 99 yards.
Arizona State’s season came to an end in double overtime. Longhorns cornerback Andrew Mukuba intercepted Leavitt on a 3rd and 8 play.
This sealed the victory for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns got the ball first in the second overtime and answered quickly. They scored on a touchdown when Ewers hit Gunnar Helm for a 25-yard touchdown reception.
Following the play, Ewers hit Golden to complete the two-point conversion.
Texas also second a touchdown in the first overtime. Ewers hit Golden for a 28-yard touchdown reception.
Skattebo scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown in the first overtime.
Arizona State outscored Texas 21-7 in the third and fourth quarters. Skattebo hit Malik McClain for a 42-yard touchdown reception.
Following the play, Leavitt hit Xavier Guillory to complete the two-point play.
Skattebo scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown. After initially a holding call on the first two point play, Skattebo converted the two-point play.
Wisner rushed for a two-yard loss. Ewers recovered the ball; however, it resulted in a safety for the Sun Devils. Carston Kieffer also made a 36-yard field goal.
The Longhorns lone points during this time when Ewers score on a five-yard rushing touchdown.
Texas led 17-3 at halftime. Ewers hit DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 23-yard touchdown reception.
Silas Bolden also scored when he returned a punt for a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Bert Auburn also made a 22-yard field goal.
Sun Devils’ Kieffer also made a 39-yard field goal.
