The New England Patriots fired head coach Jerod Mayo. He was in his first season with the team.
Mayo took over this season after the Patriots parted ways with legendary coach Bill Belichick in January. When Mayo was hired for the role, the team said that he was being mentored for the head coaching role.
It turned out to be a disaster. The Patriots finished the season with a 3-14 record.
“Just there in the locker room, pretty emotional,” Mayo said, according to NESN. “But at the same time, these guys have been turning the page, ignoring the noise and just coming to work every day and I’m very appreciative of that. I told them after the first win of the season, ‘Coaches are nothing without the players.’ And I just told them that again. I just appreciate all of the effort.
“I also told them, ‘Look, today it’s all about the game. We’ll have enough time here tomorrow, next couple of days to address all the other things.’ At some point and time here, I have my normal meeting with the Krafts and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
The Patriots were in play for the top overall pick before Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. However, they won the game 23-16 over the Bills at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Now, the six-time Super Bowl champs are looking for a new head coach as they fell to the No. 4 overall pick.
One logical pick is Mike Vrabel for this job. He spent this past season as a consultant with the Cleveland Browns.
He is expected to be a hot commodity in the coaching circle this offseason. Vrabel is expected to interview for several jobs unless the Patriots hire him first.
Before joining the Browns, he had success as the Tennessee Titans head coach. He was 54-45 as the Titans head coach in six seasons.
Vrabel played for the Patriots from 2001 through 2008.
