The Seattle Seahawks have fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. He had just completed his first season in the role.

It was also his first season as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald hired him away from the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Before going to Alabama, he was the Washington Huskies offensive coordinator. Grubb briefly followed Kalen DeBoer to Alabama after he was hired to replace Nick Saban but a short time later was hired by Macdonald.

“It’s really as simple as, I felt like the direction our offense was going was different than the vision I had for our team, and I felt like it was a necessary decision at this point,” Macdonald said. “Ryan’s a heck of a football coach. We did some really great things on offense this year. Geno (Smith) had a bunch of career highs throwing the ball, and we did some really cool situational stuff, I know Jax (Jaxon Smith-Njigba) had a great year. So we did a lot of great things, it’s just that my vision for our offense just ultimately was different from where I thought Ryan thought it was going. So we respect the heck out of him, we wish him the best.

“These are tough decisions to make. These are really tough decisions to make, but the team comes first, and I just felt like it was best for the team… I think we just needed to go in a different direction, and that’s why we ultimately made the move.”

Macdonald would like to hire a new coach quickly. However, it’s not clear who he may be targeting at this time.

“We’re going to open it up,” he said. “We’re going to do our research and be thorough with it. We want to be efficient, we want to move quickly, but we want to be smart as well. We’re just looking for the right fit on the type of person that’s going to come in and lead our offense. Not that we weren’t aligned with Ryan, but definitely looking for alignment and shared vision about how we want to operate.”

Grubb helped mentor Smith to a career season. He went 10-7 as a starter. He also had 4,320 passing yards along with 21 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.

The 4,320 passing yards were Smith’s most passing yards in a season since 2022 when he had 4,282 passing yards.
