According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed free-agent pitcher Max Scherzer. He has agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract.
Passan reported on X that Scherzer was targeted by the Blue Jays for the last several weeks. However, they finally struck a deal on Thursday.
FanGraphics projects that Scherzer will be the team’s fourth starter. Kevin Gausman will be the ace of the rotation.
José Berrios and Chris Bassitt will pitch in the rotation before Scherzer. Bowden Francis is projected to be the team’s fifth starter.
The 40-year-old Scherzer has been pitching at the Major League Baseball level since the 2008 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Scherzer will pitch for a Canadian team for the first find in his career. He will also be pitching in the American League for part of his 8th season.
He spent part of the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers. He also spent five seasons with the Detroit Tigers.
Scherzer spent part of seven seasons with the Washington Nationals. He was also part of their 2019 World Series team.
He also won a second World Series with the Rangers in 2023.
In his career, he also pitched for the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Scherzer is 216-112 with 457 starts. He also has two games finished, according to Baseball Reference, 12 complete games, and five shutouts.
He also has a 3.16 ERA in 2,878 innings.
