The Las Vegas Raiders hired Chip Kelly as their new offensive coordinator on Sunday night. Kelly — a former NFL head coach — will work with new Raiders head coach Pete Carroll.

The 61-year-old is on the move for the second straight coaching cycle. Last offseason, he departed his head coaching job with the UCLA Bruins to become the Ohio State Buckeyes offensive coordinator.

In January, Kelly was one of the coaches, including head coach Ryan Day, to guide the Buckeyes to the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff National Championship. They defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the season finale.

However, since the title game, the Buckeyes have lost several coaches. Day has now lost both coordinators.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles departed to become the Penn State Nittany Lions defensive coordinator.

Carroll is getting an innovative mind, who once had one of the most explosive game plans in college football. When he was the Oregon Ducks head coach, teams struggled with his game plans.

However, when he worked in the NFL before, his offensive scheme did not work like many thought it would. Will it work this time around? We’ll have to wait and see.

He is returning to the NFL for the first time since the 2016 season. That’s when he was with the San Francisco 49ers for one season before being fired.

Kelly was the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2024. He was the UCLA Bruins head coach from 2018 through 2023.

He was the aforementioned 49ers head coach in 2016. Kelly also spent three seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach from 2013 through 2015.

He was the Ducks head coach from 2009 through 2012. He also was their offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008.

Kelly was the New Hampshire Wildcats offensive coordinator from 1999 through 2006. He also spent two seasons as the Wildcats offensive line coach in 1997 and 1998.

He was also their Wildcats running backs coach from 1994 through 1996. Kelly was the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays defensive coordinator in 1993.

He was the Wildcats running backs coach in 1992. Kelly began his coaching career with the Columbia Lions.

In 1991, he was the Lions’ outside linebackers coach and safeties coach. His first coaching job with the Lions in 1990 was as their defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator.
