Bond Coat-sponsored Funny Car driver Chad Green has claimed his first Gatornationals Wally. He defeated Ron Capps in the final round.
Green went 3.921 at 329.18 mph to get the win at the 56th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida. Capps went 6.500 at 110.23 mph in the losing effort.

“This race is so special, I mean it’s the Gators,” Green said. “There are so many historical things that have happened at this race for so many years and I was saying in my [top end] interview that my very first race down the racetrack in an official race car was here at this track, so yeah, it means a lot to me.

“I’ve always said it’s so important to start the year off and do well at the first race or else you’re behind the eight ball. This just takes the cake right here. To start No. 1 in points, that’s awesome. I’m just so excited.”
Capps — who is a San Luis Obispo, California native, who now resides in Carlsbad, California — held a 5-1 advantage against Green in prior events. However this was the first time they faced each other in the final round.
Green — who is a Midland, Texas native — was the No. 13 qualifier for the race due to the rain on Saturday. This was just the fourth win for the No. 13 qualifier at this race, as they are 4-14 overall.

Capps had a better reaction time, which resulted in a starting line advantage. He began to pull away, but then hazed the tires around the 200-foot mark.
He attempted to regain control of the car. But was not able to do so.
Green then went down the groove for the win. This is the second Funny Car win of his career.
