Strong, Fudd, Bueckers lead Huskies over Gamecocks to win national championship

The Connecticut Huskies womens basketball team, a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, beat down the South Carolina Gamecocks, a No. 1 seed, on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies won 82-59 over the Gamecocks to win the national championship at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

This is the Huskies’ 12th national championship, but it is their first title since the 2015-16 season.

Since 2010, the Huskies have won six titles. They won the title in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2025.

The Huskies also won the national title in 1995, 2000, 2022, 2003, 2004, and 2009.

Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma is now 12-1 all-time in national championship games since he took over the Huskies program in 1985. The only loss came to the Gamecocks in a 64-49 loss on April 3rd, 2022, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Huskies also defeated the then-No. 4 Gamecocks in their regular-season meeting. UCONN won 87-58 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday, February 16th.

UCONN improved to 37-3 on the season. South Carolina fell to 35-4 with the loss.

According to the Huskies Athletic website, the Huskies are 11-5 against the Gamecocks dating back to December 17th, 2007.

Before this season, the Gamecocks had won four straight games in the series from November 22nd, 2021 at Paradise Island, Bahamas in a 73-57 loss through an 81-77 loss on February 11th, 2024, in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Huskies led 36-26 at halftime. Then, they had a big second half, where they outscored the Gamecocks 46-33 in the final two quarters.

Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 24 points apiece. Strong also had five rebounds, one assist, and three steals.

Fudd had 15 rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals.

They were one of three players, who scored in double digits in the game for the Huskies. Paige Bueckers — who is projected to be the top pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings — had 17 points in her final collegiate game.

The Huskies had 13 bench points. KK Arnold led the bench with nine points.

Joyce Edwards and Tessa Johnson led the Gamecocks with 10 points each. Edwards had five rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.

Johnson had three rebounds, one block, and one steal.

Edwards and Johnson were the only two Gamecocks players, who scored at least 10 points in the game. Their starters accounted for 24 points. Chloe Kitts led the starters with nine points.

The Gamecocks had 35 bench points. Edwards and Johnson led the bench with the aforementioned 10 points.
