However, it is the Islanders’ first No. 1 overall pick since the 2009 NHL Draft. The team also had the top pick in the 1972, 1973, and 2000 NHL Drafts.

With their last first-round pick, the Islanders drafted center John Tavares, who was with their team until 2019. In 2000, the Islanders drafted goaltender Rick DiPietro with the top overall selection.

Before 2000, the Islanders had not had the top overall section since 1973. That’s when they drafted defenseman Denis Potvin with the top pick in the 1973 NHL Draft.

In 1972, the Islanders used the top pick on right winger Billy Harris.

Whichever prospect goes to the Islanders will hope to make an impact on the team that went 35-35-12.

The Islanders were nine points behind the Montréal Canadiens, who were the final playoff team in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens had 91 points.

According to NHL.com, the Islanders were the sixth worst in the Eastern Conference Wild Card, as only the Ottawa Senators and the Canadiens reached the playoffs from the Wild Card round. The Senators had 97 points, and the Canadiens had 91 points.

There are three prospects are the top of the draft. However, at this time, it is not clear who the Islanders will pick, as they will do an evaluation process before making the pick in June.

Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer is one top prospect. Another top prospect is Saginaw Spirit center Michael Misa. Boston College center James Hagens is also considered the final top prospect, who is in the mix for the top selection.
