The award is named after John W. Heisman, a former football coach, and player, who is credited with inventing the various strategies and formations utilized in the game today.

The Heisman Trophy has been awarded since 1935 and is voted on by a panel of sports reporters, former players, and coaches. The winner is chosen based on his outstanding performance which best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.

The trophy itself is a bronze statue of a football participant in a stiff-arm pose, standing on a pedestal.

Some of the well-known recipients of the Heisman Trophy consist of O.J. Simpson, Herschel Walker, Tim Tebow, Barry Sanders, and Bo Jackson. Jay Berwanger was the first winner of the award in 1935.

Many of the winners have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL.
