The Washington Commanders were the last team to hire a head coach in this coaching cycle. They have finally found their new leader.
The Commanders have hired Dan Quinn as their new head coach. He comes to the team from their arch rivals.
Quinn has spent the last three seasons as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator. Before being hired by the Cowboys, he was the Atlanta Falcons head coach.
He is replacing Ron Rivera, who was fired at the end of the season.
In Washington, Quinn will work with new owner Josh Harris, who made his first head coaching hire after taking over control of the franchise from former disgruntled owner Dan Snyder. New General Manager Adam Peters, who was hired away from the San Francisco 49ers, also had a hand in the hire.
Many thought that Quinn would have taken over the Seattle Seahawks head coaching role after Pete Carroll parted ways with the organization. However, the team ultimately hired Mike McDonald as their new head coach.
Quinn is taking over a franchise that went 4-13 under Rivera last season. Due to their lackluster record, the team will have the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
Peters and Quinn will have to decide if the team will continue with Sam Howell as their starting quarterback or draft one. If they draft a quarterback, then they’ll focus on either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye with the No. 2 overall pick.
If they decide that Howell is their man, then the team could target either offensive line or wide receiver help. Marvin Harrison Jr. has been projected to be the No. 2 overall pick by some mock drafts.
Quinn has a 43-42 record as a head coach with the Falcons. He had two seasons, where the team won at least 10 or more games.
In 2016, the Falcons went 11-5. He guided the team to the Super Bowl that season before losing to the New England Patriots in the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
The following season, Quinn guided the Falcons to a 10-6 record. However, in his final two-plus seasons, the team went 14-23.
The team had back to back 7-9 seasons. Then, in 2020, the team went 0-5 before his departure.
