Keefe was fired following a 4-3 series loss to the Boston Bruins.
The Maple Leafs have been knocked out in the first round or second round of the playoffs in each of the last four seasons. The second round came in 2022-23 when they lost 4-1 to the Florida Panthers.
The team also lost in the qualifying round in 2019-20. Their first round exits stretch back to 2016-17.
This will be Berube’s third head coaching opportunity in the NHL. He previously served as a head coach with the Philadelphia Flyers and the St. Louis Blues.
His most success came with the Blues. He guided the team to the 2019 Stanley Cup Championship.
Berube is 206-132-44 as a head coach in the regular season. He is also 24-27 in the postseason with the aforementioned Stanley Cup Championship.
This past season, the Maple Leafs went 46-26-10. Then they lost in Game 7 to the Bruins.
