Atco, NJ – Ben Dier, a 23-year-old Top Alcohol Dragster driver, was involved in a bad accident on Friday night in the second qualifying run at Atco Dragway. He crashed when he was racing against Jackie Fricke.

He was in the left lane as his car veered into the right lane and crashed into the wall. There was a fire, which was put out quickly by the Atco track officials.

Dier was one of several crashes on Friday, including a driver, who flipped, as well — which caused a lengthy delay. Dier’s crash also caused a long delay, too, before track officials got things together for the rest of the TAD and Top Alcohol Funny Car runs.

He did not cross the finish line on the run and had a DNF. Fricke went 5.356 at 280.49 mph in her pass.

According to the Atco Dragway announcer, Dier walked away from the crash. Track officials said that he was OK.

He qualified seventh in his first run going 5.817 at 242.98 mph. Tom Fox Jr. had the bump spot with his 6.104 at 248.52 mph after the first run.

Dier was trying to qualify for the eight-car field for Saturday’s eliminations. With his crash and no backup car, he’s likely done for the weekend as the local driver and his team looked to fix the damage.
