“Marty is the perfect person to help us in the interim,” Richardson said in a statement released by the team. “He worked with us for 15 years and understands the culture we have here. He had a lot to do with the core of our team being in place. I’m thankful that he is willing to help us in this transition period.”
The belief is that Hurney will serve as their interim GM for this upcoming season. Then, once the season is over, Richardson will determine who will be their next GM whether that will be Hurney or a search is announced to find a GM outside of the organization.

“I never lost the connection with the organization,” Hurney said in a statement released by the Panthers. “I’ve gained a lot of perspectives and have looked at things in different ways. I think I can help this team in a lot of areas. I think I’ve grown. And I feel I’m better prepared to come in this time and do a better job than I did over the 12 years I was general manager last time.”
Hurney is taking over the job and has work to do as the Panthers went 6-10 in the 2016 season. The team was the fourth team in the NFC South Division.
