Utley to start rehab assignment in the Florida State League

Chase Utley is getting one step closer to playing for the Philadelphia Phillies. Utley is expected to fly down to Clearwater, Florida today to attend extended Spring Training games.

He is expected to start playing in these games soon. Once there, he will be able to start rehabbing with the Phillies minor league team in the Florida State League.

He’s currently been out with patellar tendinitis. Utley is expected to return to the Phillies at the end of May. At least that is the hope.

This news comes as the Phillies are on a three-game win streak. They will look to make it four in a row against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies are coming off a series sweep of the Washington Nationals.

In their last game, Raúl Ibañez led the Phillies with three RBIs in a 7-3 win at Citizens Bank Park.

The Pasadena, California native has yet to play in a game this season. It is not clear when he will make his season debut at press time.

He last played for the Phillies in their National League Championship Series loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Giants defeated the Phillies 4-2 in the series.

In Game 6 of the series, Utley went 1 for 3 with a walk. He also had a double and a hit-by-pitch in the 13-8 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

During the 2010 season, Utley had a .275 batting average in 115 games. He had 16 home runs and 65 RBIs in 425 at-bats.

The 16 home runs were tied for fourth on the team. Ibañez also had 16 home runs in 155 games.
