The Wisconsin Badgers have had a lot of good running backs in their long, historic football tradition. But Melvin Gordon III may be their best back ever.
Gordon, who had several 200-plus rushing games this season, broke the FBS single-game rushing record in three quarters against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this afternoon. He had 408 yards through the three quarters.
The 408 yards broke former TCU Horned Frogs back LaDainian Tomlinson, who had 406 yards in 1999.

Gordon and Tomlinson are the only FBS backs to break 400 yards in a game. Tony Sands is third in the record books with four yards short with 396 yards in 1991.

In today’s 52-17 game, Gordon has four touchdowns. He scored a 62-yard run in the second, then added a one-yard run and a 6-yard run within three minutes apart in the third.
With the time expired at the end of the third, Gordon broke through for a 26-yard rushing touchdown.
Gordon only needed 25 carries to get the 408 yards. Four of his teammates have counted for 15 carries for 115 yards.

In this game, he has also more yards than the Wake Forest Demon Deacons has had all season. In 10 games, Wake Forest had 317 carries for 341 yards.

Last week, he had 25 carries for 205 yards against the Purdue Boilermakers. He also had 27 carries for 259 yards in a 20-14 loss at Northwestern Wildcats on October 4th.
He had 13 carries for 253 yards in a 68-17 win over Bowling Green Falcons on September 20th.
