The New York Knicks have fired head coach Derek Fisher. He was in his second season with the team.
He made it through just 54 games of his second season.
Fisher was hand-picked for the job by Knicks President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson. The former NBA player played for the legendary coach with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I know it’s a relief for him, taking away some of that stress from the job,” Jackson said. “It’s also a person I have a long relationship with and care deeply about and hope for his success. It’s time for us to make a change, turn this team around, move forward and get some wins, and keep going down the road we started here at the beginning of the year.”
The Knicks are 23-31 this season. The team had improved slightly over Fisher’s first season with the team.
During the 2014-15 season, Fisher guided his team to a 17-65 record.
The Knicks made the move now due to their losing streak. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said that “Fisher was not transitioning from the role of player to coach effectively.”
Before being named Knicks head coach, Fisher had no prior coaching experience in the head coaching role. He replaced Mike Woodson, who spent parts of three seasons in the Big Apple.
Jackson hoped that Fisher’s experience as a player would translate into the new role.
Fisher played in the NBA from 1996 through 2014.

He played for a variety of teams with the majority of his career coming with the Lakers.
Fish also played for the Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Dallas Mavericks.
During his playing career, as the point guard, Fisher’s team won five NBA Championships. All five NBA Championships came with the Lakers.
Woodson went 109-79 in his three seasons with the Knicks. He also guided the team to one playoff series win.
“This is a very talented team with strong character and I am confident they will succeed,” Fisher said in a statement. “Obviously, I’m disappointed, but have learned an immense amount from this experience and hope to grow from it.”
