The Boston Red Sox lead the World Series 1-0. The Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-4, on Tuesday night at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.
According to ESPN’s Stats & Information, teams, who have won Game 1 of the World Series, have gone on to win the Best-of-7 Series 63.3% of the time. Teams, who have won game one, are 69-40 in the Fall Classic.
Rafael Devers collected his 13th career postseason RBI for the Red Sox, according to ESPN’s Stats & Information. That’s the second-most by a player before turning 22 in postseason history.
He broke a tie with Miguel Cabrera, who had 12. Former MLB player Andruw Jones leads with 14.
Benintendi is the third Red Sox player, according to ESPN’s Stats & Information, to have a four-hit game in the World Series. He joins Jacoby Ellsbury in Game 3 of the 2007 World Series and Wally Moses in Game 4 of the 1946 World Series.
He is just the fourth player in the Expansion Era with a four-hit game in the World Series before turning 25.
Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw allowed five runs or more in eight postseason starts. It is the most such starts in postseason history.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Eduardo Núñez came off the bench and gave the Dodgers a crushing blow. He hit a three-run home run to left field that put the Red Sox up 8-4.
On the play, Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez scored.
Manny Machado cut the Red Sox’s lead to 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning. Machado’s sacrifice fly scored Max Muncy.
After the game was tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Red Sox scored two runs to take a 5-3 lead. Xander Bogaerts grounded into a fielder’s choice to shortstop to give Boston a 4-3 lead, as Mookie Betts scored.
On the play, Benintendi moved to third base and Steve Pearce moved to second base. Then, Rafael Devers singled to right field to score Benintendi.
Machado tied the game in the top of the fifth as he grounded out to second base. But Brian Dozier scored on the play.
Martinez doubled to deep center field in the bottom of the third inning. Pearce scored, as Boston took a 3-2 lead.
Machado also singled to left field in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. That allowed Justin Turner to score.
Matt Kemp cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. He hit a 389-foot home run to left field.
The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Benintendi singled to right field to take the 1-0 lead, as Betts scored on the play.
Benintendi advanced to second base on the throw. Martinez then singled to center field to score Benintendi.
Chris Sale received a no-decision for the Red Sox. He went four innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits, including a home run.
Matt Barnes received the win, as he went one inning after replacing Sale. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
Joe Kelley, Ryan Brasier, and Eduardo Rodríguez all received holds. Kelly went one inning and struck out two batters. Brasier went 2/3 of an inning and allowed one run on two hits and walked a batter.
Rodríguez went 1/3 of an inning.
Kershaw received the loss for the Dodgers. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters and walking three.
