Liberty Flames head coach Turner Gill retired on Monday. Several hours later, FootballScoop is reporting that Hugh Freeze is a strong candidate to replace Gill.
The 49-year-old Oxford, Mississippi native has reportedly interviewed for the Tennessee Volunteers Offensive Coordinator job. He also reportedly talked to Willie Taggart on Monday after he lost his Offensive Coordinator Walt Ball to become the new UMass Minutemen head coach.
Freeze was named the Arizona Hotshots Offensive Coordinator in October in the Alliance of American Football. Prior to accepting the Hotshots job, he was the Ole Miss Rebels head coach from 2012 through 2016.

He resigned in July 2016 after given an ultimatum of resigning or be fired for violating the morals clause in his contract. Matt Luke was named the interim head coach.
The violation was his calls to a number that was a female escort service. Freeze claimed he “misdialed the number.”
However, after an investigation, he reportedly made a “concerning pattern” of calls before he arrived at the school.
As the Rebels head coach, he was 39-25. His best season was in 2015 when the team went 10-3 with a win in the Sugar Bowl.
They finished the season as the No. 9 ranked team in the country.
Freeze was the Arkansas State Red Wolves head coach in 2011, where he guided the team to an 11-2 record. One year prior, he was the Red Wolves Offensive Coordinator.

He also spent two seasons as the Lambuth Eagles head coach and went 20-5 at the school in 2008 and 2009. He has gone 69-32 in his stops as a college football head coach.
He is 3-1 in Bowl games. He also went 1-2 in NAIA playoffs.
Before Lambuth, he was the Rebels Tight Ends and Recruiting Coordinator in 2006 and 2007. He was the Briarcrest High School Saints head coach from 2005 through 2004 in Tennessee.
He began his coaching career as the Briarcrest Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach from 1992 through 1994.
