Red Sox designate Blake Swihart for assignment

The Boston Red Sox have designated Blake Swihart for assignment. According to Evan Drellich, his time with the team is over.

Before this roster move, he was arbitration eligible in 2020. And he was bound for free agency in 2023.

The roster move was made before the Red Sox take on their long-time rival, the New York Yankees, in The Bronx. The Red Sox have called up Sandy León to take Swihart’s roster spot.

León is expected to be the catcher for Chris Sale on Tuesday night.

He was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He spent five seasons with the team four plus seasons with the team before this roster move.

He also was part of the Red Sox team that won the 2018 World Series. He appeared in two of the World Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The utility man can play catcher, first base, and the outfield.

This season, he had a .231 batting average with one home run and four RBIs in 12 games. He also had one double on six hits, while scoring four runs.

In his career, he had a .255 batting average with nine home runs and 58 RBIs in 203 games since 2015. He also had 28 doubles and four triples on 146 hits through 573 at-bats. He also scored 89 runs.
