The Miami (Florida) Hurricanes are the latest college football team to withdraw from an upcoming Bowl game. The school announced that the Hurricanes will not play in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

The New Year’s Eve game is now off unless a new opponent will be named. The Hurricanes were slated to play the Washington State Cougars in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas on CBS.

Before the cancellation, the game was scheduled to be played on December 31st at noon EST on CBS.

“We are extremely disappointed that our football team will be unable to participate in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl,” Hurricanes Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Strawley said. “But due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting our roster we do not have enough student-athletes to safely compete, and the health and safety of our student-athletes will always be our top priority. This team worked hard all season to earn a bowl invitation and my heart goes out to our student-athletes, especially our seniors. I also want to thank Interim Head Coach Jess Simpson and our football staff for all of their efforts in preparation for this bowl game.

“We regret the impact this has on the Washington State program and their postseason experience. I want to commend the Sun Bowl Association for their tireless work in helping us navigate this situation over the past several days. We are grateful for their support as an Atlantic Coast Conference bowl partner.”

This is the third Bowl game that was halted on Sunday due to COVID-19 concerns. The Military Bowl and the Fenway Bowl were also canceled due to the same concerns.

The second-oldest Bowl game in the country last held a Bowl in 2019 between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Florida State Seminoles. The Sun Devils won 20-14.

Only the historic Rose Bowl game has been in existence longer than the Sun Bowl.

With the expected cancellation, the Hurricanes and the Cougars will not play again until 2022. Mario Cristobal will lead the Canes when they return to action.

Jake Dickert will be in his first full season after taking over on an interim basis this past season. Dickert took over when Nick Rolovich was fired for not getting the COVID-19 vaccination.
