Mariners acquire Kolten Wong

The Seattle Mariners acquired second baseman Kolten Wong on Friday. In exchange, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired left fielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro.

Wong is expected to be the Mariners starting second baseman. According to RosterResource.com, he is expected to be the team’s sixth batter in their lineup.

He is the latest player for the Mariners in their starting lineup to be acquired via a trade. Wong is the sixth player since December 2018 to be acquired in a trade to be in the starting lineup.

He is the second person to be acquired to be an expected starter in 2023. Teoscar Hernández was also acquired in November 2022 in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

This will be Wong’s third MLB team. He spent the last two seasons with the Brewers. Prior to joining Milwaukee, he spent eight seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Wong had a .251 batting average in 134 games. He also had 15 home runs and 47 RBIs in 430 at-bats.

The 15 home runs were a career-high. His previous high was 14 home runs in his first season in Milwaukee.

He had 29 of his home runs with the Brewers. He had 53 in his first eight seasons in the league.

Winker, like Wong, will be joining his third MLB team. He began his career with the Cincinnati Reds before joining the Mariners last season.

He had a .219 batting average in 136 games. He also had 14 home runs and 53 RBIs in 456 at-bats.

The 2021 All-Star returns to the National League with this move. He had 66 home runs in five seasons with the Reds.

Toro will also be on his third MLB team. He also played for the Houston Astros before joining the Mariners during the 2021 season.

This past season, Toro had a .185 batting average in 109 games. He had 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 324 at-bats.

He has had 21 home runs in the last two seasons. He has 26 career home runs.

Toro is slated to be the Brewers starting second baseman, according to RosterResource.com. Winker is expected to be the team’s designated hitter.
