Vikings hire Brian Flores as defensive coordinator

The Minnesota Vikings named Brian Flores as their new defensive coordinator. He comes to the Vikings from the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

Flores replaced Ed Donatell, who was fired after the team’s playoff loss to the New York Giants. Donatell served one season as the Vikings defensive coordinator before his departure.

The 41-year-old coach takes over a defense that allowed 427 points in 2022. They allowed on average 25.1.points per game, which was 28th-best out of the 32 teams. 

The Vikings had just four games where they allowed 20 points or fewer. They gave up a season-low seven points in a 23-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. 

Flores will be a defensive coordinator for the first time in his career in 2023. Before accepting  this job, he served as the Steelers senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach this past season. 

He was the Miami Dolphins head coach for three seasons from 2019 through 2021. Before joining the Dolphins, he worked for the New England Patriots from 2008 through 2018.

Flores began as a special teams assistant in 2008. In his final season in 2018, he served as their linebackers coach.
