The San Francisco 49ers have hired Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator. He replaces DeMeco Ryans, who was recently hired by the Houston Texans as their head coach.
Wilks interviewed for the position on Monday. The 53-year-old is a perfect fit for the team.

He is taking over one of the best defensive units in the league. At one point, this past season, they were considered the best defensive unit in the league.
Under Ryans, the defense allowed 16.3 points per game. That was the best out of the 32 teams in the league.
Before coming to San Francisco, Wilks served as an assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers. He began the season as their Defensive passing game coordinator & secondary coach.
Then once Matt Rhule was fired following the fifth game, Wilks was promoted to interim head coach. He went 6-6 as the interim head coach.
Ironically, Wilks became the Panthers head coach after Rhule was fired following a 37-15 loss to the 49ers. The Panthers went 1-4 under Rhule before Wilks took over.
This will be Wilks’ second defensive coordinator job in the league. He was the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator in 2019 under former head coach Freddie Kitchens.
