According to VRT, a local news outlet, he stopped a penalty kick before collapsing to the ground.

“The ball was still in play,” Winkel Sport B assistant coach Stefaan Dewerchin said. “Our goalkeeper got up as quickly as possible to get the ball, but he fell down afterwards. It was really terrible to see.”

Due to the incident, the game was halted. After emergency personnel arrived to try to save his life, they tried to revive him for approximately 30 minutes.

After arriving at the hospital, he was declared dead.

“The players all showered together after the incident and then we sat down in the canteen,” says Dewerchin. “When the message came that our goalkeeper had died, what an unusually hard blow. I think some players do not yet realize what exactly happened.”

At this time, it is not clear how the team is going to process his loss. Games could potentially be postponed in the coming days until the team is ready to suit up and play once again.

They are going to need time to process and heal from this traumatic experience.
