MOHNTON, PA — The McPhillips Racing team had both of their teams race the final round at their home track. But only one of them could win.
Tony Stewart defeated teammate Matt Cummings at Maple Grove Raceway on Saturday. Cummings did not register a time.

The Florida native experienced a sheared fuel pump drive almost immediately. He did not cross the finish line.

Stewart went straight down the track.
“It wasn’t the race that we both were looking forward to obviously,” Stewart said after the race. “Matt when he stepped on the gas, he broke a shaft and a fuel pump. We cut an awesome light. He cut a pretty good light, too. It was going to be a good race. Unfortunately, I got a free ride down there when he broke. It was good for the points for us. I think that gets us in the points lead. That’s a big deal today. It’s way beyond this event with the national points that are important. It was a great weekend here. The McPhillips Racing team put both of these cars in the final and that shows the depth of this team, how strong and solid they are.”
Rich and Richie McPhillips, the crew chiefs for these two teams, reside in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania area. It is a short drive away from the track.
“Being that this is a home race for them, it makes this even more special. Obviously, they have a lot of friends and family here this weekend. To get both of these cars in the final in front of their friends and family, it’s a pretty cool accomplishment for them. They’re used to that. It’s their team standard and they know how to give us good race cars.”
Stewart now has three Divisional races this season. He also won the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas. Then, in May, he won a North Central Divisional race called “Cleetus and Cars” featuring popular YouTuber Cleetus McFarland in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The NASCAR Hall of Famer is the Top Alcohol Dragster points leader with the win.

“It all counts. From the time that you leave Gainesville through the end of the year in Pomona, it all counts. You don’t take any of these for granted. With this being your car owner’s home race and home track, there is a little bit more pressure but it makes it even more rewarding when it goes right. I’m really appreciative to Rich, Richie, and Renee who bust their (butt) on these race cars”
