No. 13 ND beat down Midshipmen in Ireland

No. 13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish kicked off the 2023 college football season with a win. They defeated the Navy Midshipmen 42-3 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

With the win, the Fighting Irish improved to 1-0 on the season. The Midshipmen fell to 0-1.

This was the Midshipmen’s coaching debut of Brian Newberry, who replaced Ken Niumatalolo when he was fired at the end of last season. Before being named the Midshipmen’s head coach, Newberry had no previous head coaching experience.

He had been the team’s defensive coordinator from 2019 through 2022 before the promotion to head coach.

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman went 19 of 23 for 251 yards. He had four touchdowns.

This was Hartman’s debut at the school after transferring from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the off-season.

Audric Estime had 16 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown. Jaden Greathouse had three receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Midshipmen quarterback Tai Lavatai went 3 of 6 for 43 yards.

Alex Tecza had eight carries for 38 yards. Brandon Chatman had two receptions for 41 yards.

The Fighting Irish outscored the Midshipmen 14-3 in the second half. Hartman hit Greenhouse for a 20-yard touchdown reception. 

Hartman hit Deion Colzie for a 25-yard touchdown reception.

Midshipmen got on the board when Evan Warren made a 31-yard field goal. 

Notre Dame led 28-0 at halftime. Estime scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Jadarian Price scored on a 19-yard rushing touchdown. Hartman hit Greenhouse for a 35-yard touchdown reception. Hartman also connected with Jayden Thomas for a 14-yard touchdown reception.
