Steelers fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada after dreadful play-calling

The Pittsburgh Steelers have fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada. He had been the team’s offensive coordinator since the 2021 season.

The team has been outgained every game this season. The woeful offensive attack has averaged 16.6 points per game under Canada. That was good for 28th out of the 32 teams.

In addition, Canada’s offense averaged 280.1 yards per game, which was also 28th in the league. Kenny Pickett was averaging 170 passing yards through the air. That was 31st in the league.

Canada had been with the Steelers since the 2020 season. He was first their quarterbacks coach.

Then after the 2020 season, he was promoted to their offensive coordinator. He had replaced Randy Fichtner, the offensive coordinator during the 2020 season before his contract was not renewed.

Despite the woeful offensive stats, the Steelers are 6-4 on the season. The new coordinator will oversee the offense for the season’s final seven weeks.

The Steelers have yet to score 30 points on the season. Their highest scoring output was 26 points in Week 2 in a 26-22 win over the Cleveland Browns.

In the last five weeks, the Steelers have not broken 24 points. They had 24 points in a 24-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

On Sunday, Steelers running back Najee Harris complained about the Steelers offense. The Steelers were defeated 13-10 to the Browns before Harris went vocal with his comments.

Pickett has gone 170 of 281 for 1,722 yards. He has thrown six touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Mitchell Trubisky, who signed as a free agent in 2022, has barely been used this season. He has gone 18 of 32 for 156 yards. He has one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Harris leads the backs with 128 carries for 499 yards and three touchdowns. Jaylen Warren, in more than 40 carries less, has 80 carries for 493 yards and three touchdowns.

George Pickens leads the receivers with 37 receptions for 604 yards and three touchdowns. He has nearly 300 more yards than the second-leading receiver Diontae Johnson, who has played in just six games, with 335 yards.
