Mortensen was known for his NFL coverage. He went into journalism, according to reports, after he realized that he could not play sports beyond the high school level.

He had been with ESPN since 1991. In the later years, he would take less of a presence as Adam Schefter would get much of the limelight.

In recent years, he defeated cancer. If is unclear at this time if his previous cancer diagnosis came back and resulted in his death.

Before joining ESPN, he was employed by The National and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
