Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake missed Tuesday’s night game against the Seattle Sounders FC. Head coach Jim Curtin said that it was due to an injury in his post-game press conference.

However, there may be more to it than meets the eye. The 33-year-old said in a social media post that he was not happy.

“When you are no longer happy, it’s time,” Blake wrote in an Instagram story on Wednesday.

The Jamaican was released by Oliver Semmle in the game against the Sounders FC. Semmle gave up three goals, including a 50-foot goal where he was out of place and let the goal in the net.

Blake — who will be 34 years old in November — is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league. He has won the Goalkeeper of the Year three times.

According to Capology, he is being paid $775,000 this season. And his contract expires with the Union in December. However, the Union does hold a team option for the 2025 season.

He was their No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

This season, he has made five starts in Major League Soccer competitions. He has a 1-2-2 record when he has started the games.

He has a 66.7 save percentage thus far, according to Soccer Reference. In addition, he has a 1.19 goals-against average. Blake has played 302 minutes in the five games.

He helped the Union to the Supporters’ Shield in 2020. He also helped guide the team to the MLS Cup runner-up to LAFC.

Blake won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award in 2016, 2020, and 2022. He also was an MLS All-Star in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022.

He was named to the MLS Best XI in 2016, 2020, and 2022.

Blake has made 237 MLS game starts for the Union since 2014. He has a career 1.22 goals-against average and a 73.9 save percentage in 21,087 minutes.

If the Union decides to deal Blake to another team, more than likely, they’re not going to get someone close to his caliber of player. Unfortunately, that usually happens when stars are disgruntled and get traded.
