Birr’s GW FG gives Yellow Jackets upset win over FSU

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pulled the first upset of the 2024 college football season. They defeated the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles 24-21 on Saturday afternoon at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

This was the Yellow Jackets fifth outright win as a double-digit underdog under head coach Brent Key. This includes his time as an interim head coach.

Georgia Tech snapped a 15-game losing streak to Top 10 teams, according to the telecast. This was their first win over Florida State since 2016.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King went 11 of 16 for 146 yards.

King was named the Player of the Game. He also had 54 rushing yards.

Jamal Haynes had 11 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Malik Rutherford had four receptions for 66 yards.

Florida State quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei went 19 of 27 for 193 yards.

This was Uiagalelei’s first game with the Seminoles. He previously played for the Clemson Tigers and the Oregon State Beavers.

The Seminoles landed Uiagalelei in the transfer portal.

Roydell Williams had 12 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown. Ja’Khi Douglas had four receptions for 55 yards.

Georgia Tech outscored Florida State 10-7 in the second half. Haynes scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown.

Aidan Birr made the game-winning 44-yard rushing touchdown as time expired.

Williams scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown for the Seminoles in the second half.

The game was tied 14 all at halftime. Florida State’s Lawrence Toafili scored on a 28 yard rushing touchdown. Following the touchdown, the Seminoles converted a two point conversion.

Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald also made two field goals. He first made a 52 yard field goal. Then with one second left in the first half, he made a 59 yard field goal.

The Yellow Jackets scored two first half touchdowns. Zach Pyron scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Haynes also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
