Montana State overcomes 17-point deficit; defeats New Mexico

Upset Saturday continues. And it is just the first day of the college football season. 

Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)’s Montana State Bobcats defeated the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats won 35-31 at University Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Bobcats improved to 1-0 on the season. This was their lone FBS opponent this season. 

The Lobos fell to 0-1. This was Bronco Mendenhall’s first game as the New Mexico head coach. 

He came out of his sabbatical after two seasons away. This was his first game as a coach since the 2021 season when he led the Virginia Cavaliers. 

The Bobcats were an underdog in the contest. And at one point, they were down as much as 17 points. 

Yet, with 14 seconds left, Scottre Humphrey with a four yard rushing touchdown. 

This was not as big of an upset that happened earlier in the day. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles 24-21. 

Bobcats quarterback Tommy Mellott went 21 of 32 for 205 yards. He also had one touchdown pass. 

Adam Jones had 17 carries for 167 yards and one touchdown. Ty McCullouch had seven receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown.

Lobos quarterback Devon Dampier went 19 of 27 for 173 yards. He had one touchdown pass. 

Eli Sanders had 17 carries for 87 yards. Luke Wysong had six receptions for 95 yards. 

Montana State outscored New Mexico 21-7 in the second half. All 21 points came in the fourth quarter. 

Mellott scored on a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Jones scored on a 93-yard rushing touchdown. 

Humphrey also scored the aforementioned game-winning four-yard rushing touchdown. 

New Mexico’s lone points came when Mellott was sacked by Gabriel Lopez for a three-yard loss. On the play, Mellott fumbled the ball. 

Noah Avinger recovered the fumble and returned it for a 13-yard fumble return for a touchdown. 

New Mexico led 24-14 at halftime. They led 17-0 before Montana State even scored. 

Mellott was sacked by Jayden Wilson for a nine-yard loss. Mellott fumbled on the play. 

Christian Ellis recovered the fumble and then returned it for a 41-yard fumble return for a touchdown. According to the telecast, it was New Mexico’s first defensive score since the 2021 season against the San Diego State Aztecs. 

Dampier hit Trace Bruckler for a 12-yard touchdown reception. Luke Drzewiecki made a 45-yard field goal. 

Dampier also scored on a 24-yard rushing touchdown. 

Mellott hit Rylan Schlepp for a five-yard touchdown reception. Mellott also hit McCullouch for a 17-yard touchdown reception.
