The New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh. He was in his fourth season with the Jets.

The noted defensive coach guided the team to a 2-3 start this season. Jeff Ulbrich will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Owner Woody Johnson said in a statement on X. “I thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.”

“He (Ulbrich) is a tough coach, who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this off-season.”

Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not been pleased with the offensive attack.

The 45-year-old Saleh was in his first tenure as a head coach. He came to the Jets after being the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.

Saleh had two 7-10 win seasons. During his first season with the Jets, he guided the team to a 4-13 mark during the 2021 season.

Ulbrich has been the team’s defensive coordinator since Saleh’s first season with the team. This will be his first opportunity to lead a team.

The respected coordinator will lead the team in their Monday Night Football matchup on Monday, October 14th. The Jets will host the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Johnson picked Ulbrich over offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. He has been the Jets offensive coordinator the past two seasons.

Hackett had previously head coaching experience. But it was a disaster during the 2022 season with the Denver Broncos when he guided the team to a 4-11.

He was fired by the Broncos before completing his first season in Denver, Colorado.

Hackett and Rodgers previously worked together. The team was hoping that a healthy Rodgers would make a big impact.

Rodgers played in just four snaps before being injured last season. He missed the rest of the season.

The legendary quarterback worked with Hackett for three seasons as the Packers offensive coordinator in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

This season, the Jets have scored 93 points through five games. This is the second consecutive season with 93 points in five games.

However, last season, the team was led by Zach Wilson after Rodgers went down.

The Jets have the 25th-worst offense out of 32 teams in 2024. They are averaging 18.6 points per game.

Their last two losses have been by seven points. They lost to the Broncos 10-9.

Then they lost 23-17 to the Vikings.
