Major League Soccer has announced that Lionel Messi has been named the 2024 Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player on Friday. Noted soccer insider Fabrizio Romano broke the news.

Messi played his first full season in Major League Soccer in 2024. In 2023, he signed a 2 1/2 year contract with Inter Miami CF.

The decorated player received an average of 38.43% of the vote. He received 40.83% of the player vote.

He also received 43.20% of the media vote. And 31.25% of the club vote.

“Truly, it is an honor for me to receive this award from all of you,” said Messi to the more-than-250 Inter Miami CF Academy players who surprised him with the moment. “It’s a source of pride to watch you all train. I’m very happy to be here every day. I’m very happy to be in this city, in this Club that is growing…It’s a pleasure to see you grow day by day. I invite you to keep fighting and striving for your dreams.”

Messi beat out fellow players Cucho Hernández, Evander, Christian Benteke, and his teammate Luis Suárez.

Columbus Crew player Hernández was close to Messi’s tally. He received 33.70% of the total vote.

Portland Timbers player Evander received 9.24% of the total vote. D.C. United player Christian Benteke — who led MLS with the most goals on the season — received 7.10% of the total vote.

Suárez received 2.17% of the total vote.

Messi is the first Inter Miami CF player to ever win the award.

This is his latest achievement in his long career. The 37 year old is an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner among other awards.
