Legendary NFL wide receiver Randy Moss has announced that he has cancer. He made the announcement on Friday during an Instagram live.
He said that he has been in the hospital for the last six days. During the live feed, Moss said that he had surgery in relation to the cancer diagnosis.
Moss did not reveal what kind of cancer he is dealing with. However, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., a Minnesota-based sports writer and the father of NFL legend Larry Fitzgerald, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Moss is dealing with liver cancer.
Before stepping away from his role with ESPN, he was a panelist on Sunday NFL Countdown on ESPN. One Sunday, Moss had a problem with his eyes.
The following Sunday, Moss said that he was dealing with a health issue and wore sunglasses during the show.
Moss said that the cancer was found in his bowel duct. And he said he is a cancer survivor.
In the video, Moss said that he had a procedure on Thanksgiving.
According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer in the bowel duct is a “rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the bowel duct.” It is also called cholangiocarcinoma.
The 47-year-old was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. He was a first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings during the 2018 NFL Draft.
His NFL career spanned from 1998 through 2012. He spent the bulk of his career with the Vikings, where he played eight seasons.
He also played for the New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and the Tennessee Titans.
Moss appeared in 218 NFL games with 193 starts. The legendary receiver had 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns.
He also had 25 carries for 159 yards.
