Hunter Watson leads Sam Houston to their first Bowl win in New Orleans

Sam Houston has won their first FBS Bowl game. It came in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. 

The Bearkats defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles on Thursday night as they won 31-26 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

With the win, the Bearkats end their season with a 10-3 mark. They also won their first Bowl game in just their second season at the FBS level.

The Eagles — who also previously made the jump from FCS to FBS like the Bearkats — fell to 8-5 overall. Georgia Southern was a six-time FCS National Champion with their last coming in 2000.

This was the first meeting between the schools at the FBS level.

Bearkats quarterback Hunter Watson went 23 of 28 for 213 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Jay Ducker had 10 carries for 26 yards. Simeon Evans had seven receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Eagles quarterback J.C. French went 20 of 33 for 212 yards. He had one touchdown pass and four interceptions.

Jalen White had 16 carries for 90 yards and one touchdown. Derwin Burgess Jr. had six receptions for 56 yards.

Georgia Southern outscored Sam Houston 16-10 in the second half. White scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.

French also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Gavin Stewart also made a 49-yard field goal.

Sam Houston’s Watson scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Christian Pavon also made a 21-yard field goal.

Sam Houston led 21-10 at halftime. Jaylon Jimmerson scored on a 29-yard interception returned for a touchdown.

Watson hit Evans for a 33-yard touchdown reception. Watson scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown.

GSU’s French hit Josh Dallas for a 17-yard touchdown reception. Stewart made a 49-yard field goal expired in the first half.
