Fighting Illini win their second Citrus Bowl, defeat Gamecocks 21-17

The No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the No. 15 South Carolina Gamecocks on New Year’s Eve. The Fighting Illini won 21-17 over the Gamecocks in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

With the win, the Fighting Illini improved to 10-3. The Gamecocks fell to 9-4 with the loss.

This was the first meeting between these two teams.

Illinois picked up their second Citrus Bowl win. They are 2-0 all-time in the game.

They also won as the then-No. 11 Fighting Illini won 31-21 over then-No. 16 Virginia Cavaliers on January 1st, 1990.

The Gamecocks; however, are now 2-2 in their four Bowl game appearances in this contest.

South Carolina won the games on January 2nd, 2012 with a 30-13 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Two years later, they defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 34-24.

Fighting Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer went 13 of 22 for 174 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Josh McCray had 13 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Hank Beatty had four receptions for 90 yards.

Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers went 24 of 34 for 260 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Oscar Adaway III had 14 carries for 69 yards and one touchdown. Joshua Simon had six receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.

Both teams scored 14 points in the second half. McCray scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown.

McCray also scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown.

Gamecocks’ Sellers hit Simon for a six-yard touchdown reception. Adaway III scored on a 36-yard rushing touchdown.

The Fighting Illini led 7-3 at halftime. Altmyer hit Zakhari Franklin for a 15-yard touchdown reception.

Gamecocks kicker Alex Herrera made a 29-yard field goal.
