There will be no record for Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. Head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters on Wednesday that he is resting his key starters.

That means Barkley will not play on Sunday against his former team. The New York Giants will get a break in their final game of the season.

Barkley surpassed 2,000 rushing yards last Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. After he surpassed 2,000 rushing yards, Sirianni took him out of the game in the fourth quarter.

There was speculation that Barkley may go for Eric Dickerson’s 2,105 yards record. However, there was an indication that Barkley may not go for the record when he was removed from the game against the Cowboys.

Barkley has been one of the most dominant players in the league this year. He was asked earlier this year if he wanted to break the most rushing yards in a game and he said no, let the other guys eat.

In his first game against his former team, the Giants, Barkley had 176 rushing yards on October 20th, 2024. He also had one touchdown in the game.

All he needed was 101 yards to break Dickerson’s record that he set in 1984. Barkley ends the season with 2,005 yards.

The Eagles have nothing to play for in their upcoming game against the struggling Giants, as they have already secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs. Head Coach Nick Sirianni announced that he will rest his key players for this game.

The Giants, on the other hand, are focused on securing a higher draft pick. They initially held the top draft pick but lost it after winning against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Currently, the Giants have the fourth overall pick in April’s draft. However, if they beat the Eagles, their draft position could drop even further.

Barkley is the ninth running back to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season. O.J. Simpson was the only player to do it in 14 games as he had 2,003 yards in 1973 with the Buffalo Bills.

The other eight backs broke the mark in 16 games. The other backs to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season were Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders in 1997, Denver Broncos great Terrell Davis in 1998, Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis in 2003 in seasons before 2004.

Since 2009, Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson also achieved this, as did Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in 2012. And Titans running back Derrick Henry also did it in 2020.
