Last week, Wisconsin Badgers running back Melvin Gordon broke the FBS rushing record with 408 yards. Just days later, he’s no longer the record holder.

Gordon is now second behind Oklahoma Sooners freshman running back Samaje Perine, who has 427 yards. There’s a good chance, he could add to that mark as the Sooners lead 44-7 with 8:02 left in the fourth quarter against the Kansas Jayhawks.

When Gordon broke the record, he sat out the fourth quarter. He also only needed 25 carries for 408 yards, while Perine has 34 carries at the moment.

Perine has five touchdowns, all of 27 yards or more. He broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown in the first, then had a 33-yard touchdown and a 34-yard touchdown in the second.

In the third, he broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown. About 10 minutes later, he had a 27-yard rushing touchdown.

His performance is also the 100th 300-yard game in FBS history.

Like when Gordon broke the mark, the Sooners had little offense elsewhere. They have 30 passing yards from freshman quarterback Cody Thomas, 34 rushing yards from sophomore Keith Ford, 21 by Thomas, and 4 from sophomore Alex Ross.

Ford actually started the game, before Perine took over. Perine was pulled early in the fourth quarter.

Last week, while Gordon got all the spotlight, the freshman had 213 yards. That’s 640 yards in the past two weeks.

LaDainian Tomlinson had the record for 15 years, before the past two week’s performances. In 1999, he had 406 yards for the TCU Horned Frogs.
