The Brooklyn Nets have been without a general manager since early January when they re-assigned Billy King. They’ve been looking for a replacement, which they hope to have in place during the next few days.

The Nets have requested an interview with Washington Wizards Senior VP of Basketball Operations Tommy Sheppard as a candidate to replace King. According to the New York Post, he joins Bryan Colangelo, Arturas Karnisovas, and Gersson Rosas as top-of-the-list guys for the position.

Danny Ferry — the former Cleveland Cavaliers and the Atlanta Hawks GM — is reportedly no longer a candidate, according to the story.

The Post also says that Kentucky Wildcats head coach John Calipari is a long shot to be the Nets’ next head coach. According to Yahoo! Sports, Calipari wants a 10-year, $120 million deal to leave his top program.

The Wildcats are down this season after going nearly undefeated last season. Plus, Nets CEO Brett Yormark also has been pushing for the team to get him and is Calipari’s biggest supporter.

With the Nets without a GM, assistant GM Frank Zaniness has been temporarily leading the call. Once a replacement is named, he’ll move back to his assistant GM role.

While the Nets would like to interview Sheppard, it’s not a lock that the Wizards will allow him to do so. He’s been with the Wizards for the past 12 years and was named to his current post under Ernie Grunfeld before the 2013-14 season.

The Wizards already turned down an interview for him in the past. According to 92.9 FM‘s Chris Vernon, the Memphis Grizzlies wanted to interview him; however, they turned it down.

The Nets have received permission to interview Karnisovas and Rosas.
