The Loyola University-Chicago is investigating complaints against women’s basketball coach and WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes after a mass exodus of players. The Ramblers said that ten of its 12 players — who were returning — have put in requests to be released from their scholarships, or they’ve transferred.
This comes one year after five players transferred following the 2014-15 season. According to the Loyola Phoenix, the student newspaper, which cited sources, said that some members of the team elected to leave, because ‘they took issue with Swoopes’ treatment of individual players.’
The Phoenix said that at least one player met with athletic director Steve Watson and voiced their concerns.

“Any time there are allegations of student-athlete mistreatment, it is more than concerning,” Jermaine Truax, the deputy athletic director, said. “The welfare of our student-athletes is paramount. Thus, the Loyola University Chicago Police Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has asked for an independent and comprehensive university investigation into the women’s basketball program.
“Coach Swoopes is aware of and will fully cooperate with the investigation. We look forward to learning how we can resolve these allegations and improve the student-athlete experience within the women’s basketball program.”
Swoopes was hired by the school in 2013. She’s also a four-time WNBA champion, all with the Houston Comets, and a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
She was also recently elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame that’s headlined by Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson. She’ll be inducted into the Hall in September
