New York City — Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray has won the 2018 Heisman Trophy. He is the second straight Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Oklahoma.
Murray joins Baker Mayfield, who won the award last year. This is the first time in Heisman Trophy history that a school has won back-to-back Heisman Trophies with two different players.
“Like I said when I was up there, I have been working for this my whole life,” Murray said. “I feel like a lot of hard work went into this, and I’m here thanks to God, my teammates, my coaches, and my family. It hasn’t sunk in yet, but this is crazy.”

Murray won with 2,167 total points. The Heisman Trophy also returns to the place it was built in Oklahoma.
He received 517 first-place votes. He also had 278 second-place votes and 60 third-place votes.
“It’s tough to describe, but those who have been in the fire understand it,” Oklahoma Sooners Head Coach Lincoln Riley said. “They understand how much time it takes, the work that it takes, and just to get here a lot of things have to fall your way, as well. Kyler Murray getting it is the stuff of legends. With all of the high points, there have been some tough moments for him. To see all that he’s gone through and to see how he’s grown all around gives me a lot of pride.”
Murray was on 92% of the ballots. This is the third-most all-time behind former Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota, who won in 2014, and former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith, who won in 2006.
The Sooners are now tied with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes for the most all-time. Each school now has seven Heisman Trophy winners.
The Bedford, Texas native beat out Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins for the award. Tagovailoa finished second, while Haskins finished third.

Tagovailoa received 299 first-place votes. The Ewa Beach, Hawai’i native also received 431 second-place votes and 112 third-place votes.
He also was the winner of the Nissan Heisman Trophy fan vote. Tagovailoa’s 1,871 points is the most ever by a runner-up.
The Highland Park, New Jersey native received 46 first-place votes. He also received 111 second-place votes and 423 third-place votes. Haskins had 783 total points.
Murray has gone 241 of 340 for 4,053 passing yards in 13 games in his first season as the starter. He also has 40 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
He also has 123 carries for 892 yards and an additional 11 touchdowns.
“I would be lying if I said no,” Murray replied when asked if he may have had doubts. “It was definitely difficult at times when I was not playing. I always wanted to get out there. I trusted the process and performed when the time came.”
