The Salt Lake Stallions has hired Ron Zook as an assistant coach. Zook will oversee the secondary and special teams.
The 64-year-old Ashland, Ohio native last worked for the Green Bay Packers. He was employed by the team from 2015 through 2018 as the team’s Special Teams Coordinator.

“Randy Mueller (general manager) called me and asked me what I was doing,” Zook said. “I told him ‘well let me check my schedule.’ I was available, and he asked me if I was interested and I said absolutely. In the two days I’ve been here, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Zook’s first game with the team will be this weekend. The Stallions face his former boss, Steve Spurrier, and the Orlando Apollos on Saturday night.
He previously served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Gators under Spurrier.
“I coached with a lot of guys on that staff,” Zook said. “They’ve done a good job and this will be a great challenge for our football team. And from what I’ve seen, these guys are excited about it.”
Before being hired as the Packers Special Teams Coordinator, he served as the Packers Special Teams Assistant in 2014. He was the Illinois Fighting Illini head coach from 2005 through 2011.
As the Fighting Illini head coach, the team went 34-51 in seven seasons. His best season was a 9-4 record in 2007.
Before being hired by Illinois as their head coach, he was the Florida Gators head coach for three seasons in 2002 through 2004. He went 23-14 with the Gators.
His best campaign was back-to-back 8-5 records.
Prior to being appointed the Gators head coach, he was the New Orleans Saints Defensive Coordinator in 2000 and 2001. He was the Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Backs Coach in 1999.

He also served as the Special Teams Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1996 through 1998. He was the Gators Associate Head Coach/Special Teams/Safeties in 1995. He also served as the Gators Special Teams coach in 1994.
Zook was the Gators Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach from 1991 through 1993. He also served as the Ohio State Buckeyes Defensive Backs Coach from 1998 through 1990.
He was the Virginia Tech Hokies Associate Head Coach in 1987. He was the Tennessee Volunteers Defensive Backs Coach from 1984 through 1986.
He also served as the Kansas Jayhawks Defensive Coordinator in 1983. He was the Cincinnati Bearcats Defensive Coordinator in 1981 and 1982.
Zook began his coaching career as the Murray State Racers Defensive Backs Coach from 1978 through 1980.
