Ed McCaffrey has been named the Northern Colorado Bears head football coach. He replaces Earnest Collins Jr., who was let go at the end of the season.
This is McCaffrey’s first head coaching opportunity at the college level. For the past two seasons, he was the head coach at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

“Thank you Valor Christian High School for all the wonderful memories you helped create for me and my family,” McCaffrey wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday. “Especially the last two years where I was blessed to coach some of the smartest and hardest working young men in the country. I’m so proud of our players and the amazing coaching staff who joined me for the past two years.

“I am very excited to bring the same passion to this new opportunity with the UNC Bears.”
He will officially be introduced as the Bears head coach on campus on Friday. He is also taking over a program that went 2-10 during the 2019 season under Collins Jr.
McCaffrey is a three-time Super Bowl champion. This is also a big-time hire for the Bears, who the administration hopes will pay off in the long run.

This is the second straight year that a coaching hire was regarded as a big-time hire with former NFL ties, who was a prominent player. Don Beebe was hired by the Aurora Spartans last year after the 2018 season.
