The USC Trojans have their man. And it’s not a man, who you would have suspected of taking the job.
The Trojans are expected to hire Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley for the job. He had just denied any interest in the LSU Tigers job on Saturday night.
Riley takes over a Trojans team that went 4-7 this season. Their season came to an end on Saturday night in a 35-31 loss to the BYU Cougars.
He replaced Clay Helton, who was fired after two games in September. Donte Williams went 3-4 as the interim head coach.
The 38-year-old has to be getting a substantial pay raise to take the job. He made $7.6 million this past season.
College coaches have been getting paid this past week, as several coaches received extensions. One noticeable one is Michigan State, who signed Mel Tucker to a 10-year, $95 million deal.
Riley could have received a similar package from the Trojans to take this job. Once the deal becomes official, we’ll know more about his contract deals.
He led the Sooners for the past four seasons. After serving two seasons as offensive coordinator, Riley took over the program once Bob Stoops retired.
