The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Urban Meyer. The experiment lasted less than one year.

Meyer signed a five-year deal with the team in January 2021. However, he lasted just 11 months on the job.

“After deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis of the entirety of Urban’s tenure with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone,” Owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen.

“Trent Baalke continues as our general manager and will work with Darrell to ensure that our team will be inspired and competitive while representing Jacksonville proudly over our final four games of the season. In the spirit of closure and recharging our players, staff, and fan base, I will not comment further until some point following the conclusion of the NFL season.”

The successful college coach was fired following a 2-11 record. His final contest with the team was a 20-0 loss to the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday.

Meyer was fired after an allegation came to light on Wednesday by former kicker Josh Lambo. He was released by the team in October.

Before his departure, he claims that Meyer kicked him during practice. Meyer has denied the claims.

“Josh’s characterization of me and this incident is completely inaccurate, and there are eyewitnesses to refute his account,” Meyer told the Tampa Bay Times. “[General manager] Trent [Baalke] and I met with him on multiple occasions to encourage his performance, and this was never brought up.”

Meyer also had an incident on the weekend following a Thursday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was seen having a woman grinding on him in his restaurant.

He then claimed that he made a mistake and would change. Khan said that never happened.

Earlier this week, there were allegations that Meyer had heated exchanges with Marvin Jones and his assistant coaches.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has been named the team’s interim head coach. This is the second straight season that Bevell has served as an interim head coach.

He also took over after Matt Patricia was fired with the Detroit Lions during the 2020 season.
