“The Paton Racing family is heartbroken to announce that our beloved leader, Barry Paton, has passed,” the team said in a Facebook post. “His long career as both a military and commercial pilot and a lifetime of memories and inspiration spent at the dragstrip will never be forgotten.

“Rest In Peace Captain 🙏🏼”

This news comes just hours after the Texas NHRA FallNationals at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. The team attempted to qualify for the event.

Keith Murt was driving the team’s entry. However, after Saturday’s qualifying, Murt failed to qualify for the 16-car field.

He was the 18th-best driver of the 20 Top Fuel Dragster drivers on the property near Dallas. Kurt ran 3.952 at 293.89 mph.

The 16th-best car was Alex Laughlin in Scott Palmer’s entry. He went 3.870 at 318.38 mph to be the final car in the field.

It is not clear at the time of publication if Paton suffered a medical emergency on Sunday at the track or on Monday near the race track at a nearby hotel. Or if he had traveled home to his residence then passed away.
