Ole Miss Rebels head football coach Lane Kiffin is on his way to becoming the Auburn Tigers head coach. Or at least that’s what one reporter wants you to believe.
The “silly season” for head coaches will begin this weekend, as coaches will be fired at the conclusion of the regular season.

One reporter claimed that Kiffin was leaving the Rebels for a rebuilding situation with the Tigers.
“BREAKING: #OleMiss HC Lane Kiffin plans to step down as the Rebels coach Friday and head to Auburn to become the Tigers next head coach, according to sources,” WCBINews Sports Director Jon Sokoloff said in a tweet. “Sources say the Tigers haven’t officially offered the job to anyone yet. So Lane to Auburn is happening. Story soon.”
Kiffin got wind of the post. He wasn’t having it.
“That’s news to me Jon,” Kiffin said in a reply on Twitter. “🤦♂️Nice sources.”
Kiffin didn’t leave it just there. He took another shot at the reporter with his own “breaking news” report.
“This just in,” Kiffin said in a picture in a follow-up tweet. “Breaking News. Jon Sokoloff of #WCBINEWS in Starkville MS plans to step down as lead anchor and head to #WLOX to become their new lead anchor.
“Sources say WLOX hasn’t offered the job to anyone yet. So Jon to WLOX is happening. Story soon.”
The 47-year-old Kiffin has been the Rebels’ head coach since the 2020 season. He has guided the team to an 8-2 record this season.
As the Ole Miss head coach, Kiffin is 23-10.
He is 84-43 as a head coach since 2009. Before becoming the Rebels head coach, he was the Florida Atlantic Owls, USC Trojans, and Tennessee Volunteers head coach.
The Tigers are looking for a head coach after firing head coach Bryan Harsin on Halloween. “Cadillac” Willams has been serving as the team’s interim head coach.
